John Brumback - Southern Comfort
John Brumback is as nice and soft-spoken a guy as you would ever meet, a true gentleman of the game. He reminds
me of a young Paul Newman, with his clean-cut, well-dressed, cool demeanor, soft-spoken tone and blue eyes. It is a
work of pool art in motion to watch John on the table. The smoothness of his stroke, the deliberate nature of his
approach as he moves around the table, the gentle smile and the glint in his blue eyes as he takes the table down and
dispatches another shooter, are really a pleasure to watch. John is the 2009 and 2010 winner of the Banks
competition at the Derby City Classic. This is the first time anyone has captured this title in consecutive years at
Derby City. He was also the 2009 Master of the Table and runner-up in 2010. Master of the Table is the player with
the most points earned from playing in the three major divisions of the tournament; Banks, One Pocket and 9-Ball.
To be in the running a player has to finish high in all three games, and in most cases, win one of the three, to
accumulate enough points.
John resides in Kentucky with his family and is a property manager. He has been playing pool since he was about
fourteen and he is currently forty six. John prefers to play on 9-foot tables, and practices at home on a 9-foot
Steepleton that he hopes to get upgraded to a Diamond table in the near future. His practice schedule is everyday,
with an increase in time one to two months before a competition. John is a good all-around player of the game and
can hold his own in any game, but his game of choice is Banks, followed by One Pocket. But with his all-around
game he is a competitor in any contest he enters. He currently plays in two or three tournaments a year, with the
Derby City Classic being the largest of the venues. The next tournament he was considering was Gabe Owens’ T-
Town Classic at Magoo’s in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Currently he is sponsored by Steve Lomax cues and hopes to pick up some other sponsorship, such as Diamond, in
the near future. John is also starting to give lessons and pool instruction and hopes to expand this in the future to
instructional DVD’s.
